The Australian waste industry is highly vulnerable to crime. The complexity and scale of waste management operations make it difficult to monitor and regulate all activities, creating opportunities for illegal dumping, theft of recyclable materials, hazardous waste trafficking, and fraudulent disposal practices and reporting.
Open Politics and Malkara Consulting have developed the Waste Crime Prevention Workshop to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to identify attempts by criminals to infiltrate their organisation and the supply chain connected to their organisation and undertake appropriate prevention measures and respond to suspicious activities.
Who is the workshop designed for?
Local government: waste services, rangers, procurement, and contract managers.
Waste and recycling operators: managers, supervisors, gatehouse/weighbridge staff, drivers, and operations staff.
Waste industry consultants and developers and suppliers of equipment and technology for the waste management industry.
Compliance: risk managers, internal audit, fraud & integrity, legal, and finance.
Learning outcomes
On completion, participants will be able to:
Explain why waste crime is attractive to criminals;
Identify and understand the criminal actors involved in the waste management industry;
Identify regulatory and commercial gaps in waste management operations and how criminals can exploit them;
Identify common criminal methods relevant to waste operations;
Explain basic crime prevention principles;
Detect suspicious activity using indicators, and
Explain appropriate respond measures when criminal activity is detected.
